www.vannoorden.com - Architectural & Ornamental Metalwork - In 1873 Ezekiel Van Noorden, a young Dutchman and recent immigrant to the USA who was a "tin knocker" and blacksmith by trade, came to Boston in search of opportunity. He had read of the "Great Fire of Boston" which took place in what came to be know as Post Office Square and the Financial District. The fire covered about a ¼ mile radius and leveled all the wood frame buildings that preceded the tall stone and steel buildings we see today.

"Zeke" foresaw a demand for skilled metalworkers who could fabricate copper roofing, cornices, cupolas, skylights, gutters and downspouts. The company set up shop in a barn in rural Roxbury surrounded by a cow pasture!

Business prospered and by 1880 they had published a 100 page catalogue of their products. A copy of the original catalog is on display at our offices today as well as photos of the founders and early employee group photos and handwritten ledger books. "Mr. Van" as he was known to his employees would be ever so proud to see our shop today with it’s high ceiling, fine lighting, laser metal cutters, electric arc welding, forklifts and cranes! At that time the shop was filled with immigrants Dutchmen, Swedes, Norgies and Germans. In years to follow the immigrants changed and the workforce included Irish, and Italians. Nowadays we find our craftsmen are Czechs, Poles, Dominicans, Vietnamese, and Cambodians as well as just plain old Americans. Our workshop continues to be the starting point for the American Dream.

Back then the work was done with tin snips and tongs, handbrakes, foot shears, forges, and soldering irons, but times changed. Soon the machinery was electrically operated and belt driven with power shears and press brakes. The E. Van Noorden Company was one of the earliest companies in the USA to work with stainless steel and to be able to electrically arc weld it.

Early architectural projects include the copper clad "El" the elevated railway in Boston and Roxbury, the gold dome of the State House, skylights on the Museum of Fine Arts and so many other landmark buildings.

The management of the company ran down through the family through the sons-in-law. Mr. Van Noorden’s son-in-law was William G. Kieffer and his son-in-law was M. Michael Cantor. Now in the 4th generation Mike’s son William Van Noorden "Bill" Cantor has run the company since 1971, and his son Weston "Van" Cantor as the 5th generation has been working in the business since 1997 while he finishes college.
